Badge of Authenticity: Coach Hang Tag History
August 24, 2026 | By Vintage Icon Vault
The Coach hang tag is one of the brand’s most recognizable authenticity markers, but it did not exist at the beginning. In the 1960s Bonnie Cashin era, bags often carried fabric labels reading “Bonnie Cashin Design for Coach,” small internal metal plaques, or simple embossed cartouche stamps. Some early pieces also came with temporary “Feel it!” baseball-shaped leather sample swatches that were meant to demonstrate the glove-tanned hide and were rarely left attached. Permanent, dangling hang tags were not yet standard.
Coach introduced the hang tag as a formal badge of authenticity around 1972. The first versions were single-sided lozenge-shaped leather tags stamped with the Coach name and, soon after, the word “Leatherware.” These appeared just as the brand began formalizing its interior creed, or story patch, which described the leather’s natural character and later included registration numbers. By the late 1970s the lozenge hang tag and the creed had become a paired system that collectors still use to date and authenticate bags.
Through the 1980s the hang tag evolved in step with production changes. Tags became double-sided, more substantial, and less like a temporary sample. Creeds shifted from “Made in New York City” to “Made in the United States,” and registration numbers moved through different formats while remaining unique to each bag until 1994. The hang tag itself stayed a consistent visual signal even as factories and materials changed. Special editions later added metal charms, most notably the brass “Coach Established 1941” coin used on 65th Anniversary and related Legacy pieces.
Today the hang tag remains both functional and symbolic. Modern Coach tags are often more logo-driven and can be monogrammed, while archival and Reloved pieces deliberately reference the older lozenge shape. For collectors, the presence, shape, wording, and condition of a hang tag, especially when read together with the creed, still provide one of the fastest ways to place a bag in Coach’s timeline. From the absence of tags in the early Cashin years to the standardized lozenge of the classic era, the hang tag traces the brand’s move from small leather workshop to recognized American house of leather.
