Cashin Carry: Bonnie Cashin’s Coach Revolution
August 20, 2026 | By Vintage Icon Vault
Bonnie Cashin joined Coach in 1962 as the brand’s first designer, hired by Miles and Lillian Cahn to create a women’s handbag line under their leather goods company. At the time Coach was still primarily known for men’s wallets and small accessories made from glove-tanned cowhide. Cashin brought a sportswear designer’s eye to the category, treating handbags as functional “carriables” rather than decorative objects. Her first collection, Cashin-Carry, launched that same year and immediately set a new direction: clean shapes, practical proportions, and an emphasis on real-life use over formality.
Cashin’s most lasting contribution was the brass turnlock, introduced around 1964. The mechanism was inspired by the toggle that secured the top of her convertible car. She placed it on bags as a secure, industrial-feeling closure that became a Coach signature still used decades later. Beyond the hardware, she added exterior and side pockets, integrated coin purses, and brighter colorways that moved the brand away from the limited palette of dark browns and tans. Many of her designs featured removable straps so a bag could convert from shoulder to clutch, reflecting her belief that women needed adaptable pieces for multiple roles in a single day.
Her most iconic Coach designs defined the brand’s early identity. The Cashin-Carry shopping bag totes came in multiple sizes and were specifically engineered so a smaller bag could nest inside a larger one. The soft Bucket bag, the double-entry Swinger, convertible shoulder pouches with exterior pockets, and clutch styles with detachable straps all carried her practical signature. These pieces used full-grain glove-tanned leather that softened and developed character with use, often highlighted by the new brass turnlock or kisslock closures. The designs were intentional rather than trend-driven: lightweight where possible, durable by construction, and built for the active, modern woman rather than formal occasions.
Cashin remained with Coach until 1974, producing two collections a year that shaped the brand’s identity for the decade that followed. Her emphasis on function, industrial hardware, and colorful practical leather established the foundation for what collectors now recognize as classic vintage Coach. The turnlock, exterior pockets, convertible straps, and specific silhouettes she introduced, Cashin-Carry totes, Bucket bags, and Swingers—continue to appear in both archival reissues and contemporary designs. For anyone focused on pre-loved Coach, her period represents the purest expression of the brand’s original American leather ethos. bags made to be carried hard, aged honestly, and used every day.
